I would hurl words into this darkness and wait for an echo, and if an echo sounded, no matter how faintly, I would send other words to tell, to march, to fight, to create a sense of hunger for life that gnaws in us all. ~Richard Wright

Response to trisha mead-
1)The author Does try to lead you to believing that Phoenix is blind in the way she writes the story. The author dosnt throw those specific words out their but presents it in her writing.

2)The man who helps Pheonix out of the ditch holds a gun to her face because the man knows he has athority in this situation and wants to feel impowered. He wants to show who's boss.

Do you think Phoenix is a charity case?

What was the theme of the story?

responses:

Trisha- Yes it does seem like the author tries to get you to believe that Phoenix is blind. The way the author talks about her cane and how she taps it in front of here is what made me think that.
Daniel- I think that Phoenix was not planning on getting the windmill for her grandson because she didnt have the money until right before she decided. She wouldnt have been able to buy him it if the lady wouldnt have given him the second nickel.

1. How would the story be different if we knew from the beginning where Phoenix was going and why?

2. What is a possible theme of this story?

my questions:
1. Why do you think Phoenix kept the nickel? What do you think that says about her character?
2. What do you think the significance is of the hunter and the nickel that drops out of his pocket?

Jeremys questions:
1. Yes I think Phoenix is a charity case. Even though she works so hard to get there, she is still accepting charity from the hunter, the nurse, and the attandent. However, I do not think she has much of a choice because she obviously can't have a job because she is so old, and she must not have any money if she gets the medicine for her grandson for free.
2. I think the theme of the story is charity because throughout the story Phoenix accepts and steals money and accepts the free health care. I also think another theme is the determination old people have when they believe they can do something (when she walks all that way for her grandson).

1)Do you think the story would've been better if the grandma narrated it? why?

2)Did you like how the author left the purpose of the trip to town till the end or would you have rather known in the begining?

Anonymous said...

In response to Trisha:
Yes the author does make it seem as though Phoenix is blind. In the beginning it talks about her using her cane and tapping it in front of her, and the way she talked to herself remined me of a blind person.

In response to Daniel:
I dont really think there is much fear with Phoenix, but when she is in the office at the end it sort of makes me think that she is somewhat intimidated or ashamed to be there. When she is walking through the woods though, she seems fearless and confident.

Questions
1. Was there a moral to this story?

2.How did you feel towards pheonix while reading this story?

Anonymous said...

Response to Trisha Mead-
1) Yes, i do think that author lead us to believe that Phoenix was blind, maybe not completely blind but she was definetly losing her eyesight.

2)I think that the man who helps Phoenix out of the ditch holds a gun to her face to see if she was a scared old woman, and also possibly to see if she was blind or not.

Anonymous said...

Response to Daniel marine-

1. I dont think you could detect fear in Pheonix. She continued on no matter what and was not scared of the hunter.to me she seemed like she was actually fearless on her journey.

Resoponse to Jeremy Curtin-

2. I thought the theme of this story was determination. Phoenix seemed determined to get where she was going. She didn't give up although she may have faced a few struggles along the way.

1. Can you distinquish a time period this story was written in?

2. Why do you believe Pheonix takes care of her grandson?

Answers to two questions:

Trisha:
I do think that the author led the readers to think Pheonix was blind because that is what I thought almost the whole story. Her descriptions of setting had every element of taste, touch, hear, etc.

Jenna:
I do not think the story would have been better if Pheonix narrated it. That would give away the mystery as to why she is traveling on such a long journey.

Questions:

1. Why does the hunter and everyone else refer to phoenix as grandma?

2. Was the hunter making fun of phoenix when he stated "I know you old colored people! Woulndt miss going to town to see Santa Claus"

Anonymous said...

In response To Trisha
yes, I think the author tries to lead you to believe that phoenix is blind because in the story her eyes were described as "blue with age". when someone's eyes start turning blue or a hazy blue their going blind or are blind.

In response to daniel
I couldnt detect any fear in the old lady it seemed as if the author purposely made it seem like the old lady wasnt scared even in the situation where the black dog came after her.

how do you think that the story would hange if it were told in the gradnsons perspective?

How do you think the story would have changed if pheonix was younger?
What signifigance does the hunter have on pheonix?

Anonymous said...

why does pheonix's grandson"s throat stay swolled up all the time?

Anonymous said...

katie deman-- i think the moral to this story is you are never to old to help some body.

Anonymous said...

sammatha neff-- i think every one in the story refers to pheniox as "grandma" becuase she is a very old lady and it is a small town so every one knows every one else.

Anonymous said...

Beau. I dont think the story would of changed from the grandsons perspective because he wasnt part of thge story untill the end.

trisha. I do kinda think the the author believes that pheonix is blind but if she was blind how would she know the hunter is white.

my questions:

1.what is the purpose of this story?

2.do you think the author is reliable?

Anonymous said...

1. Do you think the path and/or the journey itself is symbolic of anything? Why or why not?

2. Why was Phoenix's memory lapse important to the plot? What important detail about Phoenix's journey did it reveal?

Anonymous said...

to Trisha:

yes i think the author tries to lead you on for a while, but then you realize the cane is just to help her walk.

to Jenna:

i think if the story was narrated through the grandma it would have given to much information out right away and the story wouldn't have been as good.

Questions:
1) Do you think that the author is trying to lead you on like Phoenix is an insane woman?

2)What do you think is the purpose of the man pointing the gun in Phoenix's face?

Responses:
Daniel: I think that she might have some fear of the events going on around her. But because of what kind of condition she is in she knows that it wouldn't matter if she died or what not.

Lauren: I think that the theme of this story is most definetly determination.

Anonymous said...

Tyler: 1. If the character of Phoenix had been younger (I'm assuming you mean significantly younger), first of all, it would have been much less likely that she would even have a grandson in the first place. If she did have a reason to go on the journey, being younger with possibly more living relatives and friends, she may have been able to get someone else to do it for her or found some way of getting the medicine delivered. Assuming she goes on the journey anyway, she probably wouldn't have gotten her dress caught in the thorn bush, she wouldn't have mistaken the scarecrow for a ghost, she may have been able to fend off the dog without falling into the ditch, her encounter with the hunter could have gone either way, and she wouldn't have experienced the memory loss after she arrived at the clinic.

Jordan: 2. I think the purpose of the hunter pointing the gun at Phoenix was mostly to reveal more of Phoenix's character, not only as a determined person but also as a seemingly fearless person, one who never seems to be surprised by anything, having lived for such a long time. The incident also added an unpredictable element to the hunter's character, him having just helped her up from the ditch moments before and now pointing a gun at her. This part may also serve to grab the reader's attention following the somewhat monotonous and cerebral story thus far.

?-#1)what is thauthor saying about modern society with this story?
#2)is the story an accurate portrayal of how people treat the elderly and each other today?

Anonymous said...

(answer to trisha's)-#1) the author doesnt mean to imply that the character is blind but dying. if you go back and look at the story, there are several hints (like the vulture, her frequent hallucinations and everyone telling her that shes useless.)
-#2) the man holds a gun to her face to assert his manly-ness or power or what ever you'd like to cal it. (i.e. because hes a jackass)

My Questions:
1. Why do you think the author makes Pheonix seem so mysterious with her journey?
2. Why does the author leave the point of Pheonix's journey to be revealed at the end of the story?

Response:
Trisha 1. Yes i do think that the author purposley leads the reader to believe that Pheonix is blind. I think that this adds to the mystique of Pheonix and makes the reader wonder about Pheonix and her intentions for her journey.

Daniel 2. I think that there is not so much fear within Pheonix;s old character as there is evidence of uncertainty. She shows to be a bit unsure of herself and her intentions when she finally arrives into town.

Anonymous said...

To Trisha: I really did believe that the character was blind. I thought that throughout the whole story she was. I finally figured out that she was'nt blind when she could see the colors of the presents.

To Daniel: I really didnt detect any fear throughout most of the story in the main character. I did detect a little bit of fear in her when she couldnt remember what she went to town for?

Anonymous said...

1). Why do you think the author chooses to have the main character be black?

2). Why do you think the author made the main character completely fearless throughout most of the story?

Anonymous said...

To Daniel: I think that the author was truely going to get the windmill for her grandson. I see where one might think that she wasnt becuase she never says anything about it until the very end of the story.

To Samantha: I think that everyone refers to her as grandma because of the time period. I think that this story was written a long time ago. The fact that everyone feels confortable with calling her grandma gives that away.

Anonymous said...

1). Why do you think this story was written in this specific narroration?

2). Who do you think was watching over the baby when Pheonix was going to town? She never mentions.

Anonymous said...

1. Why does everyone who meets Pheonix on her journey into town call her Granny or Grandma? The hunter and the person at the desk did not know her; was this a sign of disrespect?

2. If Pheonix had been a little younger do you think she would still be characterized as a charity case by the people she met on her way to town?

Anonymous said...

Why does the author leave the point of Pheonix's journey to be revealed at the end of the story?

I think Welty left the purpose of Pheonix's journey out of the story for so long in order for the reader to build an idea of her character first. Without the knowledge of where she was headed, I felt like Pheonix was a confused older person who was wandering around in the cold by herself, possibly lost. She seemed sort of frail, and a little crazy talking to herself. After I found out where she was going, my idea of her changed; Pheonix became a fearless, brave woman who was doing what she needed to do to provide for her family.

How did you feel towards pheonix while reading this story?

I felt concerned for Pheonix when I was reading the story. She seemed confused and forgetful. It seemed like she wasn't in any condition to be making her journey into town on her own.

Anonymous said...

1) In the beginning of the story did you believe phoenix was blind?

2) If the story was told by the boys perspective how do you think he would describe phoenix?

-Drew

Anonymous said...

In response to jordan kerrigan.

1) No, i believe the author is just showing you that she happens to be very in tune to nature because she has walked the same path all her life.

2) The point was to only scare phoenix because she was hassling the dog. he wasn't going to shoot her, only scare.

Questions:
1. what is the importance of telling the story of the grandmother's trip?
2. why does the grandma live in a the country when it would be more convenient to live in the city?

Answers:
1. to daniel marine- I can tell the grandma gets scared when she is in the hospital. She cannot remember what she made the long trip for. Because of her old age she is becoming forgetful and it worries her.
2. to lauren alfredson- I think the story would have been very different if we knew where the grandma was going from the beginning. To me, the story would have been a little boring. The story holds your attention because you want to know what a little old lady is doing walking through the woods.

Anonymous said...

Mallory:
1.This story definately took place in the early 1900's. I think this because the women was walking and there was no mention of cars being present. Also she talks about the boarded up plantations meaning that the story takes place after the civil war.

2. I think she takes care of her grandson because something happened to his parents. Medical science was not very advanced back then so they could have died for many different medical reasons.

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?
My website has a lot of exclusive content I've either authored myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any solutions to help reduce content from being stolen? I'd

Picking up Thor's hammer isn't actually a test of strength.
It's about who is worthy and the Marvel writers obviously do not want Superman picking it up. That's
not truly an arguing stage simply because it is not about strength.
